So, after nine months of endeavour across Europe, the Champions League has come down to this: AC Milan against the English.
Preying on Bayern Munich errors, picking the pockets of Germany's powerhouse with two goals in four minutes in Munich's own backyard Wednesday, Milan, won, somewhat comfortably, 2-0. Its 4-2 aggregate victory gave it the right to represent the rest of the continent in a tournament that has turned very English.
Milan travels to Manchester on April 24, with the second leg at the San Siro on May 2. It will be a semifinal of Italian guile against the pace of United's youth.
The other semi is a repeat of 2005, when Chelsea and Liverpool cancelled one another out in stubborn defensiveness until a late, controversial goal put Liverpool through.
The semis also pit three exponents of pragmatic defending against one team, United, that attacks with breathtaking, exhilarating speed.
Do not think for one moment that Milan will allow Manchester to destroy its defence as United did in putting seven goals past Roma this week.
Milan's coach Carlo Ancelotti was not born a Roman, but he played there for almost a decade and captained Roma up to 1987. His first thoughts after Wednesday turned to the "mission" to represent Italian soccer.
The manner of Milan's victory was typical. It absorbed Bayern's muscular but unimaginative thrusts. Then Clarence Seedorf and the inevitable Filippo Inzaghi scored in the space of four minutes. Game over.
What Milan had it held. Where Romans had capitulated on Tuesday, the Milanese most assuredly would not. The Germans, or those in Munich's employ, had neither the class nor, in the end, the will to break down the rearguard organized by Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta.
To win in Munich's Allianz Arena, tells all about Milan. To capitalize on error and feed on defensive uncertainty as first Seedorf, then Inzaghi did, was down to cool heads and experience.
Seedorf, a Dutchman, has won the Champions League with three different clubs. He knows where and when to strike.
Midway through the first half, from Kaká's pass, Seedorf sensed how loose the home defence was. He nudged the ball to his right, swayed out of reach of the Brazilian defender Lucio, and struck a shot through the legs of Daniel van Buyten. The shot was thus concealed, and Munich's goalie Oliver Kahn had no way of preventing the ball entering his net.
Kahn was exposed again, beaten again, within minutes. Seedorf, with his back to goal, flicked the ball with his heel. Inzaghi, slender, stealthy and so often unseen until its too late, drew Kahn before chipping the ball over the goalie.
Great players and wise managers have observed how little is seen of Inzaghi on the field as lurks on the shoulder of the last defender, on the margins of offside. Then, if the officials do not whistle him, with one touch he scores.
The 66,000 inside Munich's stadium know him as "The Terror of Bavaria" because he has scored against their team six times now. In fact, he isn't picking on them: He has scored 55 times in 89 European games.
At 33, he's barely fit, he seems only to come out on big nights, his knees and ankles cannot take the grind of week to week activity. But the instinct is undiminished.
"We were in good shape," admitted Ottmar Hitzfeld, the Bayern coach Wednesday. "We were perfectly prepared and had big plans for this match. But I have to admit we don't have the class of Milan. They play very intelligently, they capitalize on every little mistake. And when they let the ball flow between their players, it is technical perfection."
Maybe Hitzfeld gilds the lily. Maybe he, and the Bayern president, Franz Beckenbauer, and the veteran Kahn praised Milan rather than admit that their team lacked invention and belief.
Milan's aging players were allowed to impose their authority because Bayern seemed cowed by history.
Only once in 10 attempts had Munich won a match against Milan - and never over two legs in the Champions League. Having shown the mental strength to twice come from behind and finish 2-2 in Milan, the Germans had less bite than kittens on their home ground.
Milan goes forward with two objectives. The Italians on its team want, as Ancelotti said, to show that Italy has something more than Roma's capitulation suggested.
The bulk of the team was also party to Milan's own shocking defensive breakdown in Istanbul two years ago when it allowed Liverpool to come from three goals behind in the final. Liverpool then won on penalty kicks.
Some Milanese talk now of destiny, of meeting Liverpool in the finale in Athens. For that to happen, Milan must eliminate Manchester, and Liverpool has to again outsmart Chelsea.
Liverpool had already devastated PSV, 3-0, in Eindhoven. The second match in Liverpool on Wednesday had little life. A solitary goal by Peter Crouch in the second merely half sealed the inevitable as Liverpool won, 1-0.

Associazione Calcio Milan is an Italian football club based in Milan. They play in red and black stripes, giving them the nickname Rossoneri ("red-blacks"). The team is known colloquially as Milan, while its crosstown rival is known simply as Inter. Milan is a three-times World Champion club.
One of the most successful clubs in the world, A.C. Milan has won the prestigious UEFA Champions League six times (second only to Real Madrid), the World Club crown (Intercontinental Cup) 3 times, the Serie A title 17 times (only rivals Juventus F.C. have more Scudetti) and the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) five times. In total they have won 12 European trophies, sharing the record with Real Madrid. It is also one of the most supported football clubs in the world, and along with Juventus and Inter Milan are one of the most popular teams in Italy.
The club was founded in 1899 by Alfred Edwards, a British expatriate. In honour of its origins, the club has retained the English spelling of its city's name, instead of changing it to the Italian Milano (though it was forced to do it during the fascist regime, like Genoa and Inter); it should be noted that the Italian pronunciation is actually MEE-lahn, even though the English one is the same as in the local dialect and many other dialects of Northern Italy.
Historically, AC Milan was supported by the city's working classes and trade unionists (who generally used to be immigrants from Southern Italy), while Inter, the other big club from the city, was mainly supported by the more prosperous and typically Milanese middle-class. However, in recent years, the clubs have seen a notable reversal in their political positions, since Milan is now owned by media magnate and past conservative Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi, while Inter is now owned by a centre-left oil businessperson, Massimo Moratti. However, AC Milan's fans still tend to be mainly left-wing as opposed to Inter Milan fans who always have been traditionally right-wing.

The club was founded in 1899 under the name of Milan Cricket and Football club, and the first official headquarters was the Fiaschetteria Toscana of Via Breschet. The first President was Mr. Edwards, who was partnered by Alfred Kipling who chose the official club colours. On the 4th of April 1900 the first official match was played, a 3-0 defeat against the Torinese. The following year the first Scudetto was won, followed by two others in 1906 and 1907, years in which the Cricket part was removed from the name of the team. In the 1940s the team took the definite name of AC Milan, but it was in the 1950s that the team returned to winning ways thanks to the purchases of players such as Liedhol, Gren and Nordhal. In the following decade two more affirmations arrived, which brought other important signatures like those of Schiaffino, Altafini, Rivera and leader Nereo Rocco. Also at international level great successes arrived, such as on the 22nd of May 1963, when Milan won the Champions Cup in London. These were also the years of Rivera, who became the undisputable leader and flag of the team. The results of the 1970s were less brilliant, but the worst moment in the rossoneri’s history arrived in 1980, when the club was involved in the ‘totonero’ scandal and relegated to Serie B. President Colombo was banned for life, leaving his position to Morazzoni, who immediately took the team back to Serie A. The return was not a happy one, and a 14th place finish relegated the rossoneri once again. The club fell in the hands of another owner, Farina, who took Milan back to Serie A and helped them to stay in the top positions of the league, but the definite change arrived in 1986, when the club was bought by Silvio Berlusconi, who in the next twenty years built one of the most successful teams in the history of football. There was the Sacchi cycle, the arrival of Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten, the domestic and international victories, and then the arrival of Capello who continued from where his predecessor had left off, taking Milan to the top of the world. Zaccheroni, who won the tricolore in his first season, and then Ancelotti, able to win the Champions League and a Scudetto in two years, gave continuity to the team.

Some big names have joined the team that already had some of the best players in the world in key positions. AC Milan this year look like a big machine ready to repeat the success of the last two years. It seems that the rossoneri won"t be satisfied with domestic domination, they want to build an invincible image all over the world and become a brand name like Real Madrid and Manchester United. Globalisation has always been on Adriano Galliani and Silvio Berlusconi schedule in the past years and it makes perfect sense. For this reason victories are not enough, the points have to come along with entertaining performances by world class players. SEASON GOAL: AC Milan don"t want to win. They want to dominate all their opponents. It"s difficult to believe that somebody at the club will set their mind on a particular trophy and back off another one. The team was already full of great players in each position and now Stam, Dhorasoo and Crespo have joined the club making this line up the best in years. The problems came last year when the players failed to keep the hard work rate up and they lost against Boca Juniors and Deportivo La Coruna. This season the manager will be able to always have a completely fit and high class starting line up in order to avoid these mistakes.

Completely restructured and renovated upon Silvio Berlusconi’s wish, Milanello is nowadays one of the most prestigious and innovative European sport centres. Located on a hill at 300-m height, at a distance of only 50 kilometres from Milan and close to Varese, Milanello can be easily reached through the highway directed to the Lakes.
The centre, built in 1963, is placed in a green oasis of 160 thousand square metres, also comprising a pinewood and a little lake and it is located between the towns of Carnago, Cassano Magnago and Cairate. The hypothetical boundary line between these towns passes through the middle of Milanello dressing rooms.
Milanello currently represents an important asset not only for the Milan Club, but for the whole Italian football system. This was indeed the objective pursued by Andrea Rizzoli who decided to build it. The continuity has then been ensured by Silvio Berlusconi with his firm willingness to provide to coaches, trainers and players a comprehensive centre designed to satisfy their needs. The ever most advanced facilities of Milanello have often been used also by the Italian Football Association (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio) for the preparation of the National Team’s important competitions, such as the European Championships in 1988, 1996 and 2000.
At Milanello there are six regular pitches, 1 in synthetic grass (35 m x 30), 1 covered pitch with synthetic ground (42 m x 24) and a small-sized outdoor pitch in grass named "cage" because the playing field is surrounded by a 2,30 m high wall and topped by 2,5 m high fencing. Inside the cage, the play never stops, with the ball always in motion in order to enhance the speed of execution. A path running through the woods ca. 1,200 m long at various altitudes is used during the season for the players’ physical training (running and biking) and for the recovery of injured players. The main building of the centre is a two-floor building (plus the basement) hosting the offices, the players’ rooms, the chimney room, a TV-room, a pool-room; a bar, a kitchen, two dining-rooms, the press room, the meeting room, the laundry, the ironing-room and the medical centre. Next to the main building the "guest-quarters" are located, where also a few players from the Youth Department live. These youngsters, coming from various parts of Italy and from abroad too, go to school as all other teen-agers and in the afternoons attend their training sessions on the field made available to them.
A separate building apart from the main body hosts two dressing-rooms (one for the first team, the other for the youth) and a very modern gym endowed with the most advanced Technogym equipment, one of Milan’s prides.
The gym is indeed the area most frequently renovated: in the 2000-2001 season, the indoor training space has been doubled. A highly technologically advanced gym that offers the possibility to work out and evaluate the training schedule of each single player. It is an innovative centre where the players and the staff can use the most recent and sophisticated equipment available worldwide. The renovated Milanello gym equipment comprise machines for training the strength of all muscles and cardiovascular exercises, machines for joints rehabilitation and for evaluation (REV 9000), Technogym Systems (TGS), the "keys" for the setting of individual training programs and rehabilitation protocols.
Milanello is presently considered by all international operators as the Number One Sport Centre in the world. The Italian national team often designates it as location for its retreats in view of important commitments, such as the World Cup or the European Championships.
The most advanced technical-accommodation facilities and services offer the ideal conditions for the best management of sport activity at top quality levels. The last changes implemented at the centre concern the communication sector: recently 3000-m cabling has indeed been executed in order to place in strategic points the cameras of Milan Channel - the Club’s thematic channel - for the coverage of everything going on at the Sport Centre for Milan’s fans.

HOW TO REACH MILANELLO

From Malpensa Airport: motorway to Varese (A8). Exit at Solbiate Arno then follow the signposts to Carnago and then to Milanello.
From Linate Airport: east or west highway until you reach the motorway to Varese (A8) – Como – Chiasso. Continue to Varese. Exit at Solbiate Arno then follow the signposts to Carnago and then to Milanello.
By Car from all over Italy: Motorway Milano – Laghi, direction Varese A(8). Exit at Solbiate Arno then follow the signposts to Carnago and then to Milanello.
There is no public transport available to reach the centre.

1899-1929

Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club was officially formed on December 16th 1899, but the first time Milan’s name appeared publicly was on Monday 18th in an article by the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper. The Club had its first headquarters in the Fiaschetteria Toscana in Via Berchet in Milan and the President Alfred Ormonde Edwards entered the team into the Italian Football Federation the following January. During its first official season the team played just one game against Torino and despite the defeat Milan got their first Trophy, the “King’s Medal”, given by King Umberto I. In 1900/01 Milan won their first national title and their second King’s Medal (the Trophy was also won in the following season). Over the years Kiplin’s team had widespread success and Milan became the most popular team in Lombardia and won the prestigious “Palla Dapples” for three successive seasons (1904/05 - 1905/06 – 1906/07), even if it didn’t obtain great results in the Championship: the second Scudetto only came in the 1905/06 season and the third Scudetto was won the following season. The main player was Van Hege, a great top scorer with 1.1 goals per match. In the 1914/15 season the Championship was stopped before the end of the season because of the First World War, and it started again only in 1919. After several changes regarding the management of the Club, Pietro Pirelli was appointed as the new President: he held this role for almost twenty years, during which the San Siro Stadium was inaugurated.

1929-1949

Between the two World Wars the team didn’t obtain important results. In 1936 the name of the Club changed to Milan Associazione Sportiva and in 1940, after several changes in the top management, Umberto Trabattoni was appointed President and he left the Club in 1954. The team had highs and lows and rarely reached the first four places of the League. The Championship stopped because of the Second World War and started again in 1946/47: in this season Milan reached the fourth position after the great Torino, Juventus and Modena. In the two following seasons the rossoneri reached the second and the third place (the great Torino won both championships): this was the signal of the rebirth.

1949-1955

The arrival of Nordhal, top goal scorer of the 1949/50 season with 35 goals, marked the beginning of a new era. Milan was strengthened by the arrival of the great goalkeeper Buffon, and another two Swedes joined the team to make up the famous “Gre-No-Li” (Gren – Nordahl – Liedholm). In the 1950/51 season, Milan won its fourth Scudetto and the Coppa Latina as well. In 1952/53, 1953/54 and 1954/55 Nordhal, captain of the team, was the leading goal scorer and led the team to their fifth Scudetto. In 1954 Juan Alberto Schiaffino, nicknamed “Pepe”, was bought from Penarol and became one of the main protagonists of the following years.

1955-1960

In the season 1955/56 Milan played the very first match of the first edition of the European Cup: they were defeated in the semi-final by Real Madrid, who finally won the Cup. However, in the same season Milan won the Coppa Latina for the second time, defeating Athletic Bilbao (3-1) in the final match. In 1956/57 the new coach Gipo Viani won the Scudetto, but the real surprise was Gastone Bean, who scored 17 goals. A year later Josè Altafini joined the team: he won the public consent for his skills and speed, and together with the “old” captain Liedholm, Cesare Maldini and “Pepe” Schiaffino, won the Scudetto at the end of an exciting head to head with Fiorentina. The last season played by Schiaffino, one of the greatest champions in football history, wasn’t particularly successful for the rossoneri, but Milan had its revenge defeating Inter in the spring derby, winning the match 5-3 (Altafini scored four of Milan’s five goals).

1960-1970

While the previous years had been marked by the supremacy of foreign players (Gre-No-Li, Schiaffino-Altafini), in the following years, between 1960 and 1970, Italian players, who would later reach international fame, were the main characters of the rossoneri history. Some Olympic players, such as Trapattoni, Trebbi, Alfieri and Noletti joined the team, together with a young boy named Gianni Rivera who played his first game when he was only 17 against Alessandria, his previous team (Milan won 5-3). The rossoneri were protagonists in the Championship but the last two defeats against Bari and Fiorentina gave Milan the second place. When Nils Liedholm left football and at the same time “Paròn” Nereo Rocco arrived as the new coach, a new era, marked by national and international successes, started. The first trophy was the Scudetto, but the most exciting success was the first European Cup. The final against Benfica, played at Wembley on 22nd May 1963, was a fascinating match: Milan raised the cup after defeating Benfica 2-1 (Altafini scored two goals and Eusebio scored for Benfica). The image of Cesare Maldini who raised the cup together with Nereo Rocco is still imprinted in the memory of all the supporters. However Milan lost the decisive match (1-0) played at Maracanà Stadium against Santos in the final of the Europeran-South American Cup after a troubled final. At the end of the season the Chairman Andrea Rizzoli left the Club after nine years of great successes: 4 Scudetti, 1 Latin Cup and the prestigious European Cup. He is remembered not only for his sports achievements, but also for the training centre of Milanello that is still a very important asset of the Club. After a few disappointing seasons, in 1967/68 rossoneri got their ninth Scudetto and the prestige of the Club grew with the victory of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, the first in Milan’s history. In the European Cup final of the following season, the Rivera-Prati axis and the “black spider”, the goalkeeper Cudicini, led Milan to victory (4-1) against Cruijff’s Ajax. Finally Milan also achieved the European-South American Cup despite the defeat (2-0) in the return match played at the Bombonera Stadium against Estudiantes. Milan won the trophy thanks to the score (3-0) of the first match played at San Siro. The Rossoneri also won their first Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1967/68 season. Gianni Rivera, with his inborn and incomparable quality, showed beautiful actions that helped him to win the most prestigious recognition for a football player in 1969, the Golden Ball, because “Gianni Rivera is the only player who gives football a poetry sense”.

1970-1985

This period was one of the darkest in the history of the Club and it left few gratifications: the most important was the winning of the “Star” (given for 10 league titles) in 1979. During those years Milan also won three Italian Cups and their second European Cup Winners’ Cup. In the line up, led by Liedholm there was a young football player who would later become one of the undisputed protagonists in Milan’s history and one of the strongest defenders in Italian football, Franco Baresi. His first game with the rossoneri was played on April 23rd, Verona – Milan 1-2. Those years were also characterised by many changes on the bench and in the Club management. Gianni Rivera, one of the main protagonists in the achievement of the “Star”, left football forever, but he became the Vice-President of the Club. The early ’80s weren’t so positive but they saw the debut of Paolo Maldini, the heir to Franco Baresi, the historical captain. The young Paolo played his first official match on January 20th 1985 (Udinese- Milan 1-1).

1985-2006

Nils Liedholm came back on the bench, but this change didn’t improve Milan’s results and a top management turning point was clearly necessary. Finally, on March 24th 1986 Silvio Berlusconi was nominated the 21st President of Milan. He brought a great enthusiasm with an innovative market-oriented management. Despite underperforming in the Championship, Milan reached the goal of taking part in the European competitions winning the play-off against Sampdoria thanks to a goal scored by Daniele Massaro. 1987/88 was the season of the revival with the coach Arrigo Sacchi, master of the “zone play”, the total play, of pressing and speed. The team was also strengthened by the arrival of Van Basten and Gullit, together with Ancelotti and Colombo as well as Alessandro Costacurta, who came directly from Milan’s youth team. The beginning of the season was great: the extraordinary affection of the supporters was rewarded with an unforgettable season. Despite some adverse decisions from the sports judge (for example the 2-0 defeat against Roma was decided by arbitration), the team reacted with a masterpiece at San Paolo Stadium against Maradona’s Napoli: on May 18th 1988 Milan won its 11th Scudetto, the first of the Berlusconi era, defeating Napoli 3-2. In the following season the third Dutch player, Frank Rijkaard, joined the team: this was the second trio made up by players from the same country after the previous Gre-No-li trio. This led to successes and victories, indeed Milan established itself in Italy, in Europe and in the world. In 1988/89 Milan ruled over Europe winning the European Cup competition against Vitocha, Red Star, Werder Brema and Real Madrid reaching the final against Steaua Bucarest. More than one-hundred thousand Rossoneri supporters arrived in Barcellona, the most impressive exodus in football history. The coach Arrigo Sacchi contributed to win one Scudetto, two European Cups, two European-South American Cups, two European Supercups and one League Supercup. In 1992/93 Fabio Capello, who was previously a rossonero football player, substituted Arrigo Sacchi and Milan ruled especially in Italy winning four Scudetti (three consecutively), three League Supercups, one European Cup (won in the unforgettable final against the favourite Crujiff’s Barcellona) and one European Supercup. 1986-1996 was the most prolific period as regards the Rossoneri’s trophies and the so called “Immortal” and “Invincible” teams showed excellent performances and played exciting matches. But the late ‘90s weren’t as positive as the early ‘90s: Milan wasn’t as prestigious as it had been in the past both in Italy and in Europe. Some coaches alternated on the bench (Tabarez, then Sacchi and Capello again): with the arrival of Zaccheroni in 1999 Milan won its sixteenth Scudetto in the same season as the Club’s Centenary celebrations. In 2001 Ancelotti came back to A.C. Milan as a coach and a new period of successes started. The first was on May 28th, 2003 when the Rossoneri won the UEFA Champions League in an unforgettable Italian Final against Juventus. AC Milan also won the European Supercup and a national trophy, too: the Italian Cup. In the 2003/2004 season the Rossoneri won the 17th Scudetto and the League Supercup. In the last seasons A.C. Milan has been one of the protagonists both in Italy and abroad, supported by a great number of fans and a centenarian tradition rich in emotions and successes.

The San Siro, officially known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is a football stadium in Milan, Italy. It is the home stadium for two of the three most successful Italian Football League teams: A.C. Milan and Internazionale, and one of the most famous soccer stadia in the world. Although it has been officially renamed in honour of Giuseppe Meazza, the Inter and Milan player of the 1930s and 1940s, it is still commonly called the San Siro. With the spectators being so close to the pitch, the stands being so steep and with a large roof, it is considered to have one of the best atmospheres of any stadium in the world.

The stadium construction started in 1925 in the Milanese district of San Siro, which gave its original name. The idea to build a stadium in the same district of the horse racing track, belongs to the man who then was the president of A.C. Milan, Piero Pirelli. The architects designed a stadium only for football (there is no athletics track in it). The inauguration was on 19 September 1926, when 35,000 spectators saw Inter defeat Milan 6-5. Actually, during the first years the stadium was property of A.C. Milan and only Milan. Milan played its home matches there. Then in 1935 the "Comune di Milano" (city council) bought the stadium and this allowed the stadium itself to be renovated. Internazionale started to play its home matches in the San Siro stadium only in 1947.

The stadium underwent further renovations for the 1990 World Cup with $60m being spent, brining the stadium up to standard. As part of the renovations, the stadium became all seated, with an extra tier being added to 3 sides of the stadium. This entailed the building of 11 concrete towers around the outside of the stadium. A new roof was also added to the building which rests on 4 concrete tower with its distinctive protruding red girders.
